About Chhau Masks
Chhau maskas are GI tagged traditional cultural heritage of Purulia. These masks are made using paper, diluted glue and clay. In the making of these masks the craftsmen use a rough stone mould shaped like a face, over which they apply a layer of clay, then two layers of paper soaked in the diluted glue mixture and then another layer of clay. They repeat repeat this process 7-8 times and then leave the masks to dry under the sun for few days. These masks are generally used by the chhau dancers, who go from village to village to tell many stories through their dance.
